![]() ![]() Brandon from South Carolina My interpretation (I haven’t read all comments so sorry if repeat).from Hilo, HiThe line "Jesus wants to go to Venus" is a reference to the USSR's recent launch of Venera 7, the first probe to Venus. Maxine from Crackerbox PalaceHow did Levon become wealthy from a cartoon balloon business? Was it a front?."Jesus wants to go to Venus", suggests Jesus was lusting, thereby killing he father belief. Living Faith from FloridaLevon connects to two references, imo.Ģ.I felt like Jesus.the one from the song not from the big book!! Cheers! Love John and Taupin!! I was literally blowing up balloons all day. Mother Of Mary from Jupiter FloridaAll I know is that I was blowing up all these balloons for my kid's birthday party the other day and could not get this song out of my head. The song is called Levon, but really it's ultimately about Jesus and his desires to perpetuate the cycle and hold his own in the world without his father. Once the baby birds leave the nest, they forget their parents, and that's what Jesus wants to do. ![]() This is the cycle, the family plan, and it's inevitable. He has no regard for Levon because he has his own life to live, even though Levon has been there for him and has begun teaching him the ways of being a businessman. Jesus wants to go to Venus on a balloon and leave Levon far behind, pretty much forgetting about the old man. This is where the song truly transitions to Jesus and shows the cycle of new generations replacing their elders as the main characters. ![]() He's slowly giving Jesus more responsibility, and letting him begin to make his own way, teaching him how to be a businessman. This, in my opinion, shows that Levon has begun to accept that he is no longer the main character. Levon no longer counts money in garage all day - he has a family business to continue making money and involve Jesus. He clings to his money, aka his accomplishment in life that his father never achieved.Īfter the chorus, I believe is when we are introduced to a jump in time, from when Jesus is a baby to now that Jesus is an adolescent and is coming into his own. I believe this is to say that Levon isn't exactly satisfied with passing on the torch to Jesus and becoming nothing more than a background character. We soon transition back to Levon, learning that he likes money and makes a lot of it. Already, Jesus is overshadowing Levon's accomplishments and sacrifices in the war. This wasn't without sacrifice, though.Īt the beginning of the song, we are immediately told that Levon was in the war and was wounded, but the very next line we learn about Jesus. Although Levon was born a pauper and his father was a pawn, Levon ended up having a fairly nice life. Levon was named in tradition with the family plan, and the family plan means propping up the next generation to have a better life. He's simply Levon's father, the pawn, and that's all we'll ever know him as. ![]() We learn nothing of Alvin's desires, achievements, etc. The only thing we know about Alvin is his name and that he was/is a pawn. Those achievements are yours and yours alone, and your children will become the star(s) of the show, leaving you in the dust.Īlthough we don't hear about him until the chorus, let's begin with Levon's father, Alvin Tostig. Cameron from WvIn my opinion, this song is about how no matter what you achieve in life, your achievements won't matter once the next generation comes around. ![]()
